World AIDS Day parliamentary event

In view of ongoing human rights violations around the world, particularly of LGBTI people, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sophie in ‘t Veld and Marc Angel, ex-Vice-President and Co-Chair – respectively – of the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBTI Rights, have decided to co-host a session on “HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and Equal Access to PrEP in 2020: what tools can the EU use to address LGBTI needs”, on World AIDS Day. The virtual session, organized in collaboration with UNAIDS and AIDS Fonds, will be comprised of two panel debates, as outlined below.

  • Panel 1: HIV, Human Rights of LGBTI persons in the Global South (12:30-13:15)
    • Moderation: Marc Angel, LGBTI Intergroup Co-Chair
    • Speakers:
      • Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director, UNAIDS
      • Peter Sands, Executive Director, Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
      • Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships, European Commission
      • Serge Duomong, Ambassador of the Global Fund Advocate Network
  • Panel 2: LGBTI rights and equality in access to PrEP in the European Union (13:15-14:00)
    • Moderation: Sophie in ‘t Veld, LGBTI Intergroup Member and Co-Chair of MEPs for SRHR
    • Speakers:
      • Hans Kluge, Regional Director for Europe, WHO
      • Helena Dalli, Commissioner for Equality, European Commission
      • Mark Vermeulen, Executive Director, Aidsfonds
      • Max Appenroth, trans activists and Project Coordinator for Global Action for Trans Equality (GATE)
