Lithuania’s Prosecutor General turned down a request by a group of parliamentarians to “defend public interests” and ban the Baltic Pride, planned for the 8th May in Vilnius.
Recalling Lithuanian and international legislation, the Prosecutor General’s office concluded that the request by Petras Gražulis from the Order and Justice party supported by 52 other parliamentarians did not have a legal basis.
“We did not find grounds for satisfying the request”, announced Stasė Petravičienė, Chief Prosecutor in the Division for Civil Cases. According to her, the officers analysed not only national legal acts, but also international conventions. “We did not find grounds to request the court to repeal the permit for the parade granted by the municipality,” added the Prosecutor.
Michael Cashman and Ulrike Lunacek MEPs, Co-presidents of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBT Rights, welcomed these developments.
