Plenary summary: Parliament criticises Russia day ahead of Olympic Games
Yesterday one day before the Olympic Games in Sochi started, the European Parliament adopted a resolution severely criticising Russia for its repression of human rights defenders and LGBTI people.
The resolution, the Parliament “expresses its concern over . . . the law on foreign agents, the anti-LGBT legislation, the recriminalisation of defamation, the treason law and the legislation regulating public protests.”
Furthermore, the resolution calls on Russia to repeal the federal law on ‘propaganda for non-traditional sexual relations’ and similar regional anti-propaganda laws, highlighting that since the introduction of these laws, violence and discrimination against LGBTI individuals has increased.
