MEPs welcome historic YES vote Ireland

Yesterday, the Irish people voted overwhelmingly in favour of equal marriage.

The referendum was held following a government proposal to amend the constitution as to allow same-sex marriage. Irish law stipulates that all constitutional changes require a referendum.

By its yes vote, Ireland has become the 11th EU state to adopt equal marriage.

It also marks the first time that equal marriage has been adopted through a referendum.

In March 2015, the Parliament emphasised in a resolution on human rights and democracy in the world that it considers same-sex marriage or partnerships a “political, social and human and civil rights issue.”

Ulrike Lunacek MEP, Co-President of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights, reacted: “This is a celebration of equality, and I congratulate the Irish people and the campaigners of Yes Equality on this wonderful result.”

“Whether gay, lesbian, bisexual or straight: love is love, and that’s what matters.”

Daniele Viotti MEP, Co-President of the LGBTI Intergroup, continued: “This referendum was not just about marriage, it was about recognition and respecting diversity in society.”

“I am thrilled to see that Irish people have voted this way: No one should face discrimination for who they are and everyone deserves equal rights.”
