Upcoming event: LGBTI Rights in Tunisia
On Wednesday 17 February, from 13:30 – 15:00 h, the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights will host a roundtable on LGBTI Rights in Tunisia.
Two years ago Tunisia adopted a new constitution, which has been hailed as one of the Arab world’s most progressive constitutions, enshrining civil rights and gender equality. Despite this new constitution, abusive laws dating back to the dictatorship are still in effect and same-sex sexual activity remains illegal. Recently Shams, the first human rights NGO working on LGBTI rights, was ordered to suspend its activities.
At this round table, we will address the key developments and challenges affecting LGBTI people in Tunisia and seek ways to address them. Particularly, we will discuss the role of the EU in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy, and the practical consequences of the EU’s LGBTI Guidelines.
Speakers will include Yamina Thabet from ATSM (Tunisian Association Supporting Minorities), Alexandre Baron from the European Commission and Gosia Lachut from the European External Action Service. The meeting is chaired by Ian Duncan MEP, Vice-President of the LGBTI Intergroup.
